City Council provides 1st & 2nd reading for Hughes Lake structure plan

Jan 16, 2018 | 1:20 PM

Grande Prairie City Council gave 1st and 2nd reading Monday night to the Hughes Lake structure plan.

This would govern future development of 19 quarters of recently annexed land North and West of the Grande Prairie Airport.

According to Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given, this plan has been in the works for quite some time.

” Hughes Lake is really an outcome of the annexation process which was started three Councils ago. I think it shows that a theme for Grande Prairie City Councils over the past couple of decades has really been future-focused and moving forward. “

Third reading did not go ahead because of concerns from the County of Grande Prairie.

” The County has some questions or concerns with respect to the Hughes Lake development and the impact that it would have to Range Road 70. It is I think something from our view is something that is quite a ways off. We know that the Hughes Lake structure plan is actually a massive area. It probably covers twice or three times the typical area structure plan, ” added Given.

Dispute resolution steps need to be provided before the City of Grande Prairie can move on to third reading.

Most of the land in the area structure plan will be for industrial use. There would also be commercial zoning and green space around the lake.
