Indigenous Veterans Day service to be held in Grande Prairie

Nov 7, 2018 | 5:43 AM

For the first time in Grande Prairie, Indigenous Veterans Day will be observed Thursday.

Spokesperson Renee Charbonneau says the intent is to hold an annual service.

“We wanted to do this event and ceremony to bring all of the Veterans together to celebrate what the Indigenous peoples of our region have done. Their contribution to World War 1 and World War 2, are unparalleled in Canada.”

She says it is about recognizing the fallen soldiers and the different traditions in place to honour them.

“And they honour their war dead in a very different way than we do, with drums, with blessings and so we wanted to be able to follow suit and give our regional First Nations veterans and their families an opportunity to let them celebrate this way.”

The ceremony starts at 10:40 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park 10117 – 93 St, Thursday, November 8.

There will also be a ground-breaking ceremony for the First Nations and Metis Nations Garden to follow.
