Second elder shelter closer to creation
Construction of a second Elder’s Caring Shelter could start this spring if city council moves ahead with a loan agreement with Metis Local 1990.
The non-profit organization identified the need for the shelter in 2016, according to a report presented at a city committee meeting. Their current Elder’s Shelter opened in 2003 at 9702 99 Avenue with the capacity for 16 people.
A motion was made at committee to approve a loan for funding for a chunk of land downtown.
“I feel like our vision is within reach. This is a big, big (and) happy day for us. We have been waiting for the land for over a year and a half,” says Metis Local 1990 President, Angie Crerar.
