OTTAWA — One of the most successful coaches in Canadian university sport history is taking a new role at Carleton University.

Ravens men’s basketball coach Dave Smart has been hired as director, basketball operations for the Ottawa school.

The university says Smart will provide operational support, mentorship and technical leadership to the coaching staff of the men’s and women’s basketball programs,

He also will work with the Department of University Advancement in fundraising and community development and assist other coaches at the school.

Since 1999-2000, Smart has won 14 national titles as coach, including this year’s crown.

Ravens women’s coach Taffe Charles has been named head coach of the men’s team. The school says it will begin a search for a new women’s coach.

“It’s been a great run,” Smart said in a statement.

“Coaching is my second love, my first being my wife and children. I am very thankful to the university and I am looking forward to my new role. This gives me an opportunity to stay involved in basketball while having more time to spend with my family.”
