It’s a big weekend for some local figure skaters.

Co-Director of the skating for the Grande Prairie Skating Club Cheryl Jobson explains how members of the club are heading to a big competition in Airdrie.

“The STARSkate Championship is an Alberta wide provincial competition for the skaters. We have 10 skates competing. We have skaters participating in free skate events, interpretive events, and one skater is doing a triathlon event.”

The Championship in Airdrie is a culmination of a full season for skaters and as Jobson adds, she is hopeful the skaters are rewarded for all their hard work.

“We have had a wonderful year with our skaters. They have all been improving tremendously. There are two tiers in figure skating. The competitive tier which has their Championships in November and the STARSkate tier which has theirs this weekend. They all kind of peak at different times and the competitions leading up to the Championships are a little bit different.”

Grande Prairie will be sending athletes aged 9-17 to this weekends competition which runs both Saturday and Sunday.
