County Connector Update

The City and County say the County Connector’s ridership is increasing, and the service is receiving positive feedback.

The County’s Director of Family and Community Support Services Kathleen Turner says so far, the service is performing well.

“We are evaluating as we go,” says Turner. “We’re accepting feedback from riders, and even if people aren’t riding and they want to give some feedback, we’d love to hear from them as well. I think it’s very promising. We’re excited that people are accessing the bus and using it. We’re not making any conclusions at this point, it’s too early in the day, but it’s looking good.”

The pilot program is currently in phase two.

Right now there are no plans for expanding the service, as there’s no additional funding from the province for the County Connector, says City Transit Manager Steve Harvard.

“Anything that is done, would have to be done within the funding envelope that exists,” says Harvard. “If that means, say for instance, we found that eight trips is too much and seven is good, the County could make a decision to make that change and then reallocate that one trip to another community, to another day or another time.”

During Tuesday’s Community Living Committee Meeting, Harvard presented data on ridership numbers for March so far.

The numbers were:

• Clairmont – 159
• Sexsmith – 34
• Wembley – 19
• Beaverlodge – 12
• Hythe – 0

While residents of Hythe didn’t use the service at the time the data for March was taken, Harvard and Turner note that other communities have seen a rise in use of the County Connector.

A survey is scheduled to be released to the County in June to gather more feedback on the service.
