SPRA hands out awards

Apr 4, 2019 | 7:25 AM

One individual and one group have been saluted by the South Peace Regional Archives with its Beth Sheehan Award.

It is named for a local historian and philanthropist who used to keep an archival collection in her home. It recognizes those who have made a big contribution to preserving local history.

One of the recipients is donor, volunteer, and writer Matthew Wozniak. The 93-year-old has volunteered with the Archives since 2007. He has written several magazine articles, plus donated several things that document his family coming to the Peace Country from Poland and settling in the Wanham area.

The Beaverlodge Area Cultural Society has also been saluted. Last year, it gave the Archives 20 boxes, a donation that included over 1000 pictures. Just after it was made, Beaverlodge was hit by a flood caused by a huge thunderstorm. The area where the donated material had been stored was among the places that were flooded.

Both awards were given out at the SPRA’s annual general meeting on Saturday.
