Employment in energy sector projected to go down further

Apr 8, 2019 | 2:47 PM

A new report predicts direct employment in Canada’s oil and gas sector will be down 23% this year over levels in 2014 before the oil price shock.

Petroleum Labour Market Information is forecasting the sector will shed about 12,500 jobs this year, and it says Alberta will see the highest losses.

Petro LMI cites a number of factors including low commodity prices, a decline in capital spending and uncertainty about getting oil and gas to market.

Vice-president Carol Howes says the employment outlook for the sector will continue to be impacted until additional export capacity becomes available.
