Apr 8, 2019 | 4:45 PM

A local horse has finished in first place during the $20,000 James Smith Memorial Handicap at the Los Alamitos Race Course in California on Sunday.

Barry and Janice Sathers of Beaverlodge’s Singles Cruise earned her fourth stakes victory at the event, which was also her seventh in fourteen career starts. The Beaverlodge-bred horse was ridden by Carlos Huerta and its trainer is Paul Jones.

Singles Cruise was also a three-time stakes winner in 2018. During the Sunday race, she was able to cover the 350-yards in :17.630, overcoming 12-1 odds.

The Sathers have made a name for themselves in the world of horse racing. In 2013, the Sathers were named the Alberta Quarter Horse Racing Association’s leading owners and Breeders of the year. In 2014, they won the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity with their colt named Cruisinfourabruisin, and in 2016, the Sathers were the leading owners of the AQHA Racing Challenge Program.
