Winter weather wreaks havoc causing bus crash near Cochrane

Apr 28, 2019 | 10:02 AM

COCHRANE – Mounties from the Cochrane, detachment say several people were hurt Saturday night when a bus crashed into a ditch and rolled over.

Police say the bus was eastbound on Highway 1 with 15 people on board when it hit the ditch east of Highway 22 at around 6 p.m.

They say several people were taken to hospital with minor to serious injuries but none life-threatening.

The bus had been travelling from Lake Louise to Calgary and police say extreme weather conditions were reported at the time, including high winds and blowing snow.

Cochrane RCMP officers were also called to the scene of another crash on Highway 1 near Jumping Pound last night that involved four tractor-trailers and 11 other vehicles. There was no immediate word on possible injuries in that incident.

Police were recommending motorists stay off highways in southern Alberta last night due to blowing snow and zero visibility conditions after numerous accidents were reported across the region.

The snowfall warning previously issued by Environment Canada has ended.
