Emergency Preparedness Week reminds residents to be prepared before disaster strikes

If there was an emergency or disaster today, would you be prepared for it?

This week marks Emergency Preparedness Week and residents are encouraged to make a plan and get an emergency kit together.

Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership Coordinator Jennifer Wood says in Alberta we have a number of different situations to be prepared for, ranging from wildfires to severe storms and tornadoes, power outages, floods etc.

“It’s important to be prepared because if in a big emergency or disaster, the emergency responders can’t reach everybody right away, it may take them time to get to people and therefor we recommend that you and your family are prepared for a minimum of 72 hours to be able to take care of yourselves.”

She says it’s important to have a plan to help you and your family to know what to do in case of an emergency. The plan would include things like emergency exits from your house, meeting places and a plan for your pets.

It’s also important to have an emergency kit. This should include things like water and food that won’t spoil, flashlights, a battery powered radio, a first aid kit and any medications or personal items. Copies of important documents (like insurance and ID) should be included as well.

* And just a heads up, tomorrow (May 8) there is going to be a test of the alert ready system. It’s scheduled for 1:55 p.m. MDT. The test will come through on TV, radio and compatible wireless devices.
