County campgrounds set to open on Wednesday

May 14, 2019 | 12:20 PM

Campgrounds and day parks in the County of Grande Prairie are set to open for their summer operations tomorrow, with the May long weekend upon us.

Parks that will be opening include:

  • Kleskun Hills Park
  • Bear Lake Park
  • Pipestone Creek Park
  • Saskatoon Mountain Natural Area
  • Red Willow Park
  • Hommy Park
  • Valhalla Park
  • Demmitt Park

Pipestone Creek saw a few facility upgrades for this year, including more electrified camp sites, a new day-use play structure, a rentable day-use shelter and a gazebo that can be rented for special events. Unfortunately for those planning to check out the upgrades for the long weekend, the site is fully booked.

However, Manager of Parks and Recreation for the County Christine Rawlins notes you can book one of the many other sites.

“We are at full occupancy at Pipestone Creek this weekend,” said Rawlins. “There is still availability to book individual or group sites at our other campgrounds, Hommy, Bear Lake and Kleskun. Campers can simply call to reserve and pay by credit or debit card.”

Users are reminded to follow all rules and regulations for campgrounds and day use parks. County Regional Enforcement Services will be monitoring County campgrounds, parks and greenspaces, to ensure a safe and enjoyable May long weekend.

A reminder to be careful with campfires, as a fire advisory remains in effect throughout the County. At this time, campfires are still allowed, but monitor current conditions and advisories as conditions change.

“Whether you enjoy setting up your trailer for a few days, pitching a tent, picnicking, canoeing, or hiking, you need to look no further than the County’s eight parks and campground facilities,” said Rawlins. “Opportunities abound for outdoors enthusiasts and continue to grow every year.”
