Court update: Jail time after fatal crash

A fatal crash last fall that involved a stolen truck has led to jail time for a Grande Prairie man.

Alberta Justice says Terris Gordon Truax was given a term of just under five-and-a-half years after pleading guilty to charges of dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop at an accident where there is a death or bodily harm May 14 in Edmonton Provincial Court. He was also handed a 10-year license suspension.

Two counts of possession of property obtained by crime and one of flight from a peace officer were withdrawn.

RCMP said at the time that a stolen Ford F350 truck collided with a car at 68 Avenue and 100 Street just after 10 p.m. on October 29 of last year.

A 26-year-old man from Edmonton who was driving the car died later in hospital.

Earlier that evening, police had spotted the truck on 116 Street. It sped off when Mounties tried to pull it over. Police did not give chase because they were worried about public safety.

Truax was arrested and charged on December 5.

Jail term handed out after Cadotte Lake death

Alberta Justice says a jail term has been handed out in connection with the 2017 death of a Cadotte Lake man.

Dylan Moberley-Horseman was given a seven year sentence on a charge of break and enter to commit robbery May 3 in Peace River court. He had pleaded guilty during an earlier appearance. He was given 15 months credit for time already spent in custody.

He was also facing a manslaughter charge, but there is a stay of proceedings in place in that case.

Another man, Ramsey Carifelle, was facing the same charges. There is also a stay of proceedings in place for his charges..

They were arrested after after the May 9, 2017 death of 31-year-old Marvin Nahachick Jr. in a Cadotte Lake house fire.

Moberley-Horseman was also handed a five-year jail term back in February after pleading guilty to an aggravated assault count. He and two others were charged in connection with a beating of another inmate at the Peace River Correctional Centre that left that man in a coma.

The other two are due back in court in June.
