Relay for Life hits Grande Prairie on June 22

May 25, 2019 | 7:00 AM

The Canadian Cancer Society is hosting the annual Relay for Life walk in Grande Prairie on June 22 from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. at Legion Track and Field.

The nationwide event raises funds for research to combat all types of cancer and boasts around 100,000 participants of all ages ever year.

The Canadian Cancer Society says that nearly one in two Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

Relay for Life has a goal of creating a world where no Canadian fears cancer. The annual walk unites community members together in the promotion of that goal.

“I just want people to remember why we are doing this. There are very special people that come out for the day. Cancer has touched us all in some way and in some form and we want everybody to come out and just support the people, whether you have had cancer, you are currently living with cancer or you’re a care giver. Cancer touches us all,” says Donna Chissell from Relay for Life.

The fundraiser supports making life easier for those affected by Cancer. Funds raised also go towards cancer research.

The Relay for Life walk provides the opportunity to celebrate those who live or have conquered cancer, lost loved ones and those moving past the effects of the disease.

Teams are made up of nine people, plus one captain. Each participant on that team is expected to raise a minimum of $150. There is also a registration cost of $15 per person.

Participants can choose to join in on the walk for some exercise or cheer on survivors and walker’s trackside.

However, teams are expected to participate for the full 12 hours of the event. “Enjoy the day, enjoy the evening. As long as one person from your team is on the track at all times, you guys are good to go,” said Chissell.

Contributions can be made in many ways, but Relay for life is also in need of volunteers to help run the Grande Prairie event.

There is also an opportunity to remember a loved one by purchasing a luminary.

Relay for Life is also seeking race sponsorship through corporate goods and services or financial support.

“We welcome sponsors, we welcome teams, we welcome families. Just come out and enjoy yourself” says Chissell.
