UPDATE: (4:30 p.m. – A tender and two engines with 18 firefighters were used to battle the fire. It took 2 hours to fully extinguish and no injuries were reported. It was determined that the fire was caused by human error. The fire was 2 acres in size and limited to grass and brush.)

UPDATE: (3:30 p.m. – crews are no longer on scene and the fire is out)

The Grande Prairie Fire Department is actively fighting a fire in Muskoseepi Park, in the central part of the city.

“Right now, we’ve got it kind of under control and crews are just hitting hot spots. We anticipate being on scene another hour. Everything is really dry out there and we want to make sure its completely out,” says Steve Larsen, Platoon Chief for the City of Grande Prairie.

The Department is asking for people to stay away from the area for the time being to allow crews to move through the park with equipment.

There is no information as to how the blaze started at this time, as initial crews are still fighting the blaze. However, an investigation will be conducted to try and determine a cause.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department would like to remind residents to call 911 if you see any signs of smoke or fire.
