UPDATE: 4:40 p.m The fire is now being held at 2.2 hectares and is not expected to get any bigger. A dozer guard is in place around the whole fire.

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry says a wildfire has started 12 km northeast of Musreau Lake.

It is listed as out of control and has burned 2.2 hectares.

Firefighters, heavy equipment, and helicopters are fighting the blaze.

“We have a good handle on this fire with 50 per cent dozer guard in place and lots of water on it. Firefighting efforts are being successful,” Alberta Wildfire information Officer Kelly Burke told Everything GP.

Fire watchers say the chance of more fires starting by lightning strikes will continue to be a concern over the coming days.

The wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie area is Very High. A Fire Ban and an Off-Highway Vehicle Restriction is in place for parts of the Province of Alberta, including the Grande Prairie Forest Area effective May 22, 2019.
