RCMP advising residents of illegitimate paving business

Jul 10, 2019 | 10:43 AM

If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Grande Prairie Rural RCMP are advising the public to watch for door-to-door service peddlers after responding to an incident on July 4, involving a travelling group that has been offering paving services in the area.

This group claims to be associated with licensed businesses in the area and is offering paving services at a fraction of what it would normally cost. They are known to demand payment up front, and either never finish the work promised or do a poor job. They also drive rental vehicles and use rental equipment.

With that, Grande Prairie Rural RCMP are reminding residents to take precautions and do their homework before hiring any group, individual or company. Some safety tips they provide are:

  • Research any company/contractor prior to hiring them
  • Ask for references
  • Make efforts to know who you are speaking to
  • Ask to see their business license and identification
  • Take steps to verify information prior to hiring a company
  • Do not pay up front prior to the start of a job

If you have any information about this group or similar incidents, contact Grande Prairie RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
