Alberta Derby set for Sunday afternoon at Evergreen Park

Jul 28, 2019 | 8:30 AM

The best horses in the province will embark on Grande Prairie this afternoon for the annual Alberta Derby.

The derby is one of the hardest races to get into in Alberta as explained by Evergreen Park’s Don Moon.

“This is one of the most prestigious races in Western Canada. There is a purse of over $50,000. Eleven horses applied to be in the race, but we can only take eight. It is based on money earnings.”

Many of the horses involved in the Alberta Derby are at the top of their game and as a result some of them will be competing for an even bigger prize in August.

“Last year four of the horses in the Alberta Derby went on to the Canadian Derby. It is good timing for us because they like to run their horses every two weeks and the Alberta Derby falls two weeks ahead of the Canadian Derby. So, they bring their horses up to Grande Prairie before one of the biggest races in Canada.”

The horse races begin Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
