Toy exhibit now open at Grande Prairie Museum

The Grande Prairie museum has a new exhibit for adults and children alike.

I had one of those: 100 Years of Toys and Games has opened at the museum and will feature a variety of toys and games from each generational era.

Charles Taws, the curator and historical resources supervisor for the city of Grande Prairie says there will be iconic toys and games dating as far back as 1914.

“So it’s basically a celebration of the toys and games from the pioneer period here, right up to the present day, and we called it I had one of those because we figure most people who are coming to see this exhibit are going to say that because it has just about everything in it that we can think of in terms of toys.”

There are several toys featured from the pioneer era, and Taws says one of the oldest toys is a game called a European War Game from 1914, as well as a Felix the Cat toy from 1925.

As well as the older toys, Taws says there are toys and games ranging from the 1980’s and 1990’s to today.

“The exhibit covers right up to the present day, so we’ve got what we call the pioneer toys or the earlier simple toys, then we get into the baby boomer toys, so these are toys that a lot of people of different ages will remember.”

There will also be an interactive section for adults and children to explore, including a large game of KerPlunk and a new game called LumoPlay, where children can interact with a game projection.

The exhibit is open from now until around spring of next year in Muskoseepi Park, at 102 Street at 102 Avenue, and admission is free.
