Smith, Canada drop opener at Olympic qualifier
It was not the start Beaverlodge’s Dani Smith and the rest of Canada’s Women’s Volleyball team were looking for at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Russia.
The Canadian side fell to South Korea 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-22) in it’s opening match in Kaliningrad.
If Canada wants to clinch a berth in the 2020 Tokyo games now, they will need to win both of their next two matches against Russia tomorrow, and Mexico on Sunday to have a chance at that.
The top team from each pool from six separate tournaments being played around the globe this weekend will join host Japan in the tournament. Another loss for Canada would mean they will have to wait until the North American Qualifier tournament in January to earn a spot.
