Minister of Advanced Education to visit GPRC September 19

Aug 30, 2019 | 1:07 PM

Another provincial Minister will be coming to Grande Prairie in September.

Demetrios Nicolaides, who is the Minister of Advanced Education, will be making a stop at Grande Prairie Regional College on September 19, as he tours around the province to meet with board members, staff and students at post-secondary schools about the sector’s future.

Nicolaides, who also serves as the MLA for Calgary-Bow, will be stopping at 18 post-secondary institutions through the month of September, with GPRC slated to be the second-last stop on the trip.

The purpose of the trip is to ensure the post-secondary system is “working for all Albertans”, according to a press release.

“Post-secondary institutions are home to some of our province’s brightest thinkers and problem-solvers,” said Nicolaides, in the release. “Together, we will determine the best ways to build the workforce of the future and support a stronger and growing economy.”

Nicolaides will be touring the various learning facilities and labs at GPRC to learn about daily operations and invite feedback on different issues students are facing.

“While I have already had several meetings with post-secondary and student association leaders, it is important for me to visit each campus to engage with students, faculty, staff and leadership to listen and learn as the new minister.”

This continues the UCP’s ministerial tour of the province as they continue to acclimate since winning the provincial election back in April. Other ministers to recently visit the Grande Prairie area include Minister of Infrastructure Prasad Panda, Minister of Service Alberta Nate Glubish and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devin Dreeshen, just to name a few.

No specific schedule of where Nicolaides will be on that day has been released.
