UPDATE (4:08 p.m.) The Grande Prairie Fire Department has confirmed that the blaze this morning in Pinnacle was “electrical in nature”. Acting Platoon Chief Matthew Mann said they couldn’t pinpoint the specific cause, but there were a number of items plugged in near the “area of origin”.

A 12-year-old girl suffered minor burns after being woken up by a fire in her bedroom early Monday morning.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department was called out at 4:25 a.m. to a structure fire at 44 Pinnacle Street and upon arrival saw smoke billowing from a bedroom on the second floor of the two storey home.

Firefighters discovered the fire in a bedroom on the second floor had it under control by 4:39 a.m.

The girl was sleeping in the bedroom at the time and was awakened by the heat of the fire beside her bed, she was able to get out of her room and woke up her four family members who attempted to put out the fire but were not successful.

The 12-year-old suffered minor burns and was treated at the scene.

Damage is estimated at $7,500.

Officials say the blaze didn’t do further damage as the bedroom door was closed when the girl left the room.
