Court update: Jail sentences given for an armed robbery, hatchet attack, and jailhouse beating

Sep 6, 2019 | 4:06 PM

Alberta Justice says a Grande Prairie man charged after an armed robbery last October has been handed a four-year jail sentence.

Caiden MacKinnon pleaded guilty to a charge of robbery with a firearm August 28 in Grande Prairie court. Six firearm-related charges were withdrawn.

He was given six months credit for time already spent in custody.

Grande Prairie RCMP charged MacKinnon after a hold-up at a hotel on the west side of the city October 27 last year.

Mounties said at the time that someone took out a firearm and stole personal items from a hotel employee.

The suspect left a wallet behind and was identified from ID found in that wallet plus surveillance video.

Back in June, MacKinnon was given a two-year jail term after pleading guilty to charges of trafficking, breach of conditions, and careless use/storage of a firearm related to an ALERT seizure of drugs and guns at a Grande Prairie home earlier this year. Twenty other charges were withdrawn. His co-accused in that arrest, Taylor Leslie, is set to stand trail in March.

Jail time for hatchet attack

A Leduc County man charged after a hatchet attack in Grande Prairie has been handed jail time.

Alberta Justice says Ronald Ernest Gauthier was given an eight-month sentence, plus a 90-day intermittent jail term, a fine and a lifetime firearms prohibition August 19 after pleading guilty to a charge of assault with a weapon.

Gauthier had originally faced an attempted murder charged after an incident on April 2, 2017 at an east side home.

RCMP said at the time they found a man with what they called “significant trauma” outside of that home. He was taken to hospital.

Two people now serving time after jailhouse attack

A second man charged after a jailhouse beating that left another man in a coma has been given a jail sentence on a charge of aggravated assault.

Alberta Justice says Kyle Malcolm Beaver of Edmonton was given a sentence of just over three-years-and-eight-months during an August 27 court appearance in Peace River.

He and two others were charged after an attack in March of 2018 at the Peace River Correctional Centre left Dylan Gogan in a coma. Gogan was facing charges after a stabbing in Grande Prairie.

Dylan Moberley-Horseman of Peace River was given a five-year sentence on an aggravated assault charge in January for his role in the attack on Gogan.

A Grovedale man, Herbert Charles Wanihadie, is due for sentencing on an aggravated assault charge next January.
