Evening of Empowerment set for tonight

Sep 7, 2019 | 7:00 AM

It is being called an event to create awareness about what Odyssey House does and what domestic violence is like for women and children.

The 3rd annual Evening of Empowerment will be held Saturday night at the Pomeroy Hotel and Conference Centre.

Director of Communications Makayla Marcotte says the keynote speaker, girls 20 group founder Farah Mohamed, will talking about number things, including challenging current issues to prompt action, investing in girls education, and how fathers can empower their daughters.

“What her focus will be on will be on how important the role of the father is and how he can influence and create women of confidence and women of leadership and women of all sorts of different skill sets.”

Mohamed is also the former CEO of the Malala Fund, named after female education activist Malala Yousafzai.

The evening will include the performance of a play, something Marcotte describes as “really, really special.”

“The play is written based on interviews with survivors of violence against women. The stories are told from a front-line client support worker and survivor’s perspective. It showcases the realities associated with violence against women.”

There will also be a dinner, music, and a silent auction.

As of the noon hour Friday, some tickets were still available.

Tickets sales are open until noon Saturday.
