Record number of auto thefts recorded in Calgary

Calgary’s police chief says the city recorded the highest number of auto thefts in the country last year.
Mark Neufeld says just under 62,000 vehicles were stolen, well above the five-year trend.
Neufeld says the rise in methamphetamine use is behind the trend, with stolen vehicles being used to commit break-and-enters motivated by drug use.
Statistics Canada also reported Calgary was in the top spot in auto thefts in 2017 with an average of 111 vehicles stolen each week.
