Storm edge Wolverines in shootout; end road trip with winning record

It was a goaltending display on both sides of the rink Tuesday night, but the Storm were able to squeak out of Whitecourt with a victory to close out their three-game, season opening road trip.

Kaeden Lane stopped 27 shots and added two more saves in the shootout as the Storm topped the Wolverines 2-1 at the Scott Safety Centre.

Lane, along with Wolverines goaltender Vincent Duplessis, were unblemished through the opening 40 minutes of the game. The Storm outshot the Wolverines through the first two periods 21-16.

The Storm finally broke the deadlock in the third period, as Nathan Morgan was able to pick-pocket Adam Sandstrom at his own blue line and take it in all alone, beating Duplessis blocker side to give the Storm the lead. The goal was Morgan’s first of the young season.

That lead didn’t last long though, as the Wolverines were called for a delayed penalty less than a minute later.

As Lane went to the bench for the extra attacker, Lukas Jirousek’s pass was missed at the Whitecourt blue line and trickled down into the yawning cage. Hayden Clayton was given credit for his first of the year.

The game would go to overtime, which solved nothing. After both teams scored once in the shootout, Brody Dale snuck one short side on Duplessis in the third round to close it out and send the Storm home with a victory.

The win pushes the Storm to 2-1-0 to open the season, as they now prepare themselves for three games at Revolution Place, when the Lloydminster Bobcats visit the Swan City for a double header on Friday and Saturday. Puck drop for both games is at 7:30.

The Storm will then host the Spruce Grove Saints on Monday to close out the homestand.
