Court update: Preliminary hearing dates set in murder, gun sale, and sexual assault cases

Sep 27, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Alberta Justice says preliminary hearing dates have been set in a Sturgeon Lake murder case.

The hearing for Allan Hamelin and Harlin Martineau is set for June 1 through 10, 2020.

They were charged with murder, kidnapping, and assault with a weapon after the June 16 disappearance of Barry Goodswimmer.

His body was found in July in a rural area near Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.

Prelim. set for three accused in illegal gun sale

Alberta Justice says a preliminary hearing date has been set for the three people charged after a suspected illegal firearms deal in Grande Prairie.

The hearing for Loriann Vegso – the suspected seller, Dustin Prinz – the suspected buyer, and Hailey Badger is set for May 20 of next year.

ALERT officers arrested the three on May 13 of this year at a west side shopping centre.

Four handguns, a rifle, ammunition, and magazines were all seized. Police also confiscated body armour, more than 800 grams of cocaine, and close to $5700 cash.

Prelim. in January in sexual assault case

A preliminary hearing will be held in January for three men charged after what Grande Prairie RCMP described in a news release as ‘a sexual assault and forcible confinement investigation.’

Alberta Justice says the hearing for Garrett Kenneth Forrest, Matthew Robert Best, and Robert Wade Stewart, all of Grande Prairie, is set for January 13.

Police did not release any details on the attack. The three were arrested on March 22. Drugs and firearms were seized at the same time.

Forrest and Best face charges that include sexual assault, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, uttering threats, and trafficking cocaine.

Stewart is facing drug and weapons charges.

He is also due in court October 7 on charges related to vehicle thefts and police chases in May and June in Clairmont and Grande Prairie.
