10th Annual Sisters in Spirit Memorial Walk and Candlelight Vigil in G.P. today

Vigils are being held across Alberta today in honour of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

In Grande Prairie, a commemorative monument, Spirit Sisters Rock is being unveiled at 5 p.m.

“This all started back in March when we held a community consultation and got ideas from the community of what the community would like to see. GPRC came on board and donated to us the land and the area; a beautiful rock on the north/northeast end of the college along the Muskoseepi park trails,” explained Delaine Lambert English with the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre.

She says in the past they have met at the college, but this year everyone will meet at the rock itself.

There will be the unveiling and the blessing of the rock, traditional powwow drummers, a jingle dress song and speeches from dignitaries.

From there they will walk on the Memorial March from the college to the Friendship Centre where they will have stew and bannock and an honour table set up for families to share pictures of their loved ones.

The main purpose of the walk is to help families on their healing journey, and anyone is welcome to join.

People coming on the walk are encouraged to wear blue. Sisters in Spirit began with the Native Women’s Association of Canada many years ago and the colour they have chosen for the event is blue.

“Come out and join us. It will be a heavy event, but also an uplifting and healing event.”
