I.V. Macklin students to hold Cocoa for Kids fundraiser for Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation

Oct 9, 2019 | 4:00 PM

Grade 7 and 8 students from I.V. Macklin public school are holding a fundraiser for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in Grande Prairie.

The students will be holding a Cocoa for Kids fundraising event at Canadian Tire on November 2 and 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and at the Crosslink County Sportsplex on November 16 and 17, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The students will be selling hot cocoa by donation, and hope to raise $2,500 for the cause.

8th grader Madison Jerrett says they chose this cause to try and help other kids and their families.

“We felt that the Stollery Children’s Foundation was an excellent program to fundraise for. There are so many families in Grande Prairie who have sick children and we want to help them.”

Heather Patrick, one of the teachers at I.V. Macklin involved in helping the kids with the fundraiser says 65 students are participating in this event.

“There are students who are building the hot chocolate stand, there are students making posters, there are students who are writing stories about families in Grande Prairie who have had to use the Stollery Children’s hospital. So there are lots of kids involved.”

She adds that this fundraiser could help several local families, while also raising awareness of the foundation.

Patrick teaches the Career and Technology Foundations course, which is the class involved in the fundraiser.

“We’re trying to give our students real-life experiences, experiences that they will be challenged with or face in their futures. So we felt that fundraising is important, it’s very important to our school, but we also know that kids want to help but don’t know how to help. So we are just guiding them, they are doing all of the work on their own, and we’re hoping that they will carry that on into their future so that they are helpful citizens.”

The fundraiser is aimed at supporting Grande Prairie kids and families, and Patrick adds they would like to see a day where there are supports and services available in Grande Prairie, so they won’t have to travel down to Edmonton for treatment.

Patrick says she hopes to see a lot of turnout for the Cocoa for Kids events, and also asks people donate to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, and help Grande Prairie kids and families in need.
