Wolves Volleyball teams take home court to open season

Oct 18, 2019 | 10:37 AM

GPRC men’s and women’s volleyball teams are set to take the court at home this evening to begin the ACAC regular season against Keyano College.

After a lengthy training camp, new women’s Head Coach Lauren Hale-Miller says her team is eager to get the new campaign underway.

“I think it’s important that we start our season now, as opposed to even waiting a little bit longer because it is time to head into that competition and see other teams, and see where we need to progress as a unit,” said Hale-Miller.

The women’s side hasn’t played since September 28, when they took part in a preseason tournament hosted by Red Deer College. Though the team did go 0-4 at the tournament, the team is coming off a postseason appearance last season. With that, Hale-Miller is holding high expectations for her team heading into the regular season.

“Obviously, one of our expectations would be to make it through to the provincials for the ACAC,” said Hale-Miller. “For us, it’s just (about) getting in that top four to move on to play at Provincials in February.”

“From there, we will create our goals after that.”

Hale-Miller was named coach of the Wolves back June, coming over from the University of New Brunswick, Saint John where she was named Coach of the Year in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletics Association last season. Hale-Miller takes over for Chantelle LaMotte, who had coached the Wolves the previous two seasons

Prior to LaMotte’s tenure, it was Sam Tu’ivai that was at the helm for the women’s team, who now begins his tenure as the Head Coach of the men’s team tonight.

The GPRC men’s squad is coming off a 2-2 showing at the same preseason tournament in Red Deer and will be looking to improve on a tough campaign last year which saw them finish at 4-20 on the season.

First serve from the GPRC gym is 6 p.m. for the women’s match, with the men following at 8. The rematches will go tomorrow with the women playing at 1 and the men at 3.
