Grande Prairie RCMP’s new Superintendent already launching new operations

Grande Prairie’s RCMP detachment has a new officer in charge, who has quickly launched a new policing initiative.

Superintendent Sean Curry joined the local force just under 2 months ago, following the retirement of former Superintendent Don McKenna back in the spring. So far, Curry says he’s impressed by the officers in Grande Prairie, and the enthusiasm of the people here.

“They’ve been open to new ideas. Grande Prairie detachment has a history of looking to pilot new ideas, so they’ve been innovative. I think that innovation, that willingness to try new ideas, is going to continue along here.”

He says under his command, the operations currently underway will continue to get support.

“I want to continue with intelligence led policing, that was introduced by the province very recently. I like the idea of harm reduction, to use the resources that we have to look at those individuals who are causing harm in the community, and try to reduce that harm.”

Along with that work, Curry says he’s already launched a new initiative.

“Currently, there are some internal processes that I wanted to put in place and have initiated, to begin sharing our information and intelligence more broadly, not only within the detachment , but within the surrounding jurisdictions. So that initiative has already begun, and then as we get more comfortable with that, new initiatives will take place.”

Curry says Grande Prairie has it’s unique challenges, but is similar other detachments he’s worked at in his career .

He says he’s looking forward to working with the residents, officers, and support services in Grande Prairie to best serve the community.
