Free legal advice offered this weekend in Grande Prairie

Oct 23, 2019 | 12:20 PM

Those in need of free legal advice can take advantage of the 4th Annual Legal Advice Blitz on Saturday, held by Grande Prairie Legal Guidance.

The day is intended for those unable to regularly afford legal advice, and lawyers from different firms around Grande Prairie will be there as volunteers to offer guidance.

Tanya Ruigrok, Program Coordinator for the GPLG, says the lawyers will be able to cover several different areas of law.

“We can advise in pretty much every area of law except for criminal this year, unfortunately our criminal lawyer was unavailable on Saturday. We can do family, civil, landlord, tenant and employment, wills and estates. Almost anything you can think of, our lawyers can advise on.”

While the advice is free, there are a few guidelines in place for the day, such as those who can afford a lawyer to make an appointment with one instead of participating, and for those who already have legal representation to contact their lawyer.

The consultations are one-on-one and confidential and are set to go about 45 minutes each.

Ruigrok says having access to legal advice is very beneficial.

“Because law is complicated, and it’s very hard for your average person to know how to navigate even the smallest details of the legal system. It’s very detail-oriented, and lawyers are the experts on how to manage that system.”

She adds that they have capacity for around 56 people to receive a consultation.

Registration is open until 4 p.m. Thursday and can be done by calling 780-882-0036. The blitz takes place at 10116-102 Avenue, in Building C of The Community Village.

Participants are asked to bring a donation for the Grande Prairie Food Bank as well.
