Court update: accused murderer pleads guilty to reduced charge, short sentence in carjacking

Oct 28, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a Grande Prairie murder has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter.

Trevor Eldon Martineau entered the plea during a court appearance on October 21 in Grande Prairie court.

He is due back in court on February 14, 2020, when four other charges he is also facing will be addressed. Those other counts include assault causing bodily harm, theft under $5000, and two breach of probation order charges.

He was arrested after the February 16, 2019 death of 48-year-old Pierre Quesnel of Grande Prairie.

His family says Quesnel was the victim of a random attack.

Short sentence in carjacking case

Alberta Justice says a 42-day jail sentence has been given out after an incident last December where a young man was confronted by someone with a weapon and had his car stolen.

Awale Yusuf Abdi pleaded guilty to a single count of threats to cause death or bodily harm on October 16 and was given the 42-day sentence as time served.

Thirteen other counts, including two counts each of assault, robbery, and extortion, along with two other charges of threats to cause death or bodily harm were withdrawn.

RCMP said at the time that at around 9 a.m. on December 16, a young man was getting something out of a vehicle when someone walked up, pulled out a weapon, and demanded the car keys before driving off.

No one was injured.
