Celtics cruise to sixth straight Peace Bowl title

Nov 2, 2019 | 5:08 PM

The St Joe’s Celtics are once again the champions of Peace Country football.

Jayden Sak ran in two touchdowns, and the Celtics used a big second quarter to lift them over the Grande Prairie Composite Warriors 52-16 in the Peace Bowl on Saturday afternoon at CKC Field.

The win is the Celtics sixth straight MIghty Peace Football league title.

Both teams played tight in the first quarter, with the Warriors jumping on the board first with a touchdown on their opening drive. The Celtics would notch a field goal and safety to pull the game within one on the next two drives of the game to bring it within one.

Sak, the league’s top running back in 2019, would then carry the ball 27 yards for the Celtics first touchdown of the game late in the first quarter, giving his team an 11-6 lead after the first.

After the Warriors opened the second with a field goal, both teams would trade turnovers on the next two drives. The Celtics would then work the ball down to the Warriors one yard line, where Carter Kettyle would plunge over the goal line to make it 18-9 for St Joe’s.

The Celtics defence then made its presence known, as they would intercept Warriors QB, and league Rookie of the Year, Liam Kroeger on back-to-back drives, the latter of which Dakota Peters took all the way to the house with just under a minute left in the half, giving the Celtics a 25-9 lead.

The Warriors would then go three-and-out, leaving St Joe’s with enough time for one more play before the halftime whistle. The Celtics would take full advantage of the extra opportunity, with QB Cade Lebrecque threading the needle to league MVP Xander Matheson in double coverage for another six points.

The second half was merely semantics from there, as the Celtics cruised to yet another High School football championship.

The game was not the last for either team this season, as both now turn their attention to provincials.

Both teams will host their respective North region semifinals next Saturday at CKC Field.

In Tier I, the Warriors will take on the Fort McMurray Saints at 2:30 p.m. The Celtics will host the Austin O’Brien Crusaders from Edmonton in Tier II play before that, with kick off set for noon.
