Traffic near Smoky Hill backed up due to weather

UPDATE: Grande Prairie RCMP advise that Highway 43, at the Smoky Hill, is now open to traffic in all directions.

All roadways, in and around Grande Prairie, continue to be icy and snow covered, with reduced visibility. Delays can be expected.

RCMP are asking the public to avoid travel if possible.

Highway 43, near the Smoky Hill, is seeing significant traffic back-ups and serious delays.

The Grande Prairie RCMP say the westbound lanes of Highway 43 are backed up, and that the icy road has made it nearly impossible for many tractor trailer units to make it up Smoky Hill. A number of vehicles have also slid off the road.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

Highway maintenance crews and tow truck operators are on the scene, trying to clear the roadway. In the meantime, commuters are asked to avoid the area.

The roads in and around Grande Prairie are covered in snow and ice, and the RCMP asks the public to avoid travel unless necessary.
