Warriors top Fort Mac, will host North Region final Saturday

Nov 12, 2019 | 8:03 AM

The Grande Prairie Composite Warriors are off to the North Region final of the Tier I High School Football Provincials.

That comes after a 31-20 win over the Fort McMurray Saints on Monday at CKC Field. The two teams played a close first half, with the Comp. taking a 24-20 lead into halftime. The Warriors would add the lone touchdown of the second half to move on to the North final.

The Warriors will host the Harry Ainley Titans from Edmonton on Saturday in that game. Kick off is at noon from CKC Field. The winner of that game will go to the Alberta Bowl final on November 23 in Raymond to face off with the winner of the South Region final, which will be between the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams and the St. Francis Browns out of Calgary.

Now Monday was not as kind to both the St. Joe’s Celtics and Grande Prairie Broncos.

The Celtics hosted the Austin O’Brien Crusaders from Edmonton in the Tier II North semifinals, but were topped 46-27 by the visitors, thus ending their season.

In the Bantam Semifinal from CKC Field Monday, the Broncos lost to the visiting Lloydminster Red Dogs 51-7.

Earlier in the weekend, two other Peace Country teams took the field in high school play. The Sexsmith Sabres dropped their Tier IV semifinal to the St. Paul Lions 30-12 on Saturday. The Whitecourt Cats also saw the field in Tier III play Saturday, but were defeated by the Sturgeon Spirits 27-13.
