Nitehawk opening this weekend

Ski season arrives at Nitehawk this weekend.

Opening day is Saturday.

Assistant general manager Johnathan Clarkson says he is proud of the work the snowmaking crews did in just four days and that most of the west side of the hill will be open.

“Our plans going forward will be (that) once the weather allows and once nature cooperates here again (and) we get some colder temperatures, we’ll start making snow on the rest of the runs. We need at least -7 to -8 continuously throughout the day and evening in order to turn on the snow-making system, because it costs about $10,000 a day to make snow.”

He adds the snow that fell last weekend got people thinking about ski season.

“I was on-call this past weekend and I had probably, between the three days of the long weekend, probably about 130 calls. People just asking when are we open, are we open, that sort of thing, so definitely some great interest from the community.”

Clarkson says Nitehawk’s annual ski and snowboard swap at Evergreen Park attracted over 1200 people and $106,000 worth of equipment was sold.

Opening hours will be Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 pm. The Tube Zone is open from 1 to 5 pm.
