Farm groups seeking government help with “harvest from hell”

Nov 14, 2019 | 2:43 PM

A coalition of farm groups says action is needed on business risk management programs for farmers because of what it calls “the harvest from hell.”

Team Alberta, which includes Alberta Canola, Alberta Pulse Growers, Alberta Barley, and the Alberta Wheat Commission is also worried about trade disruptions.

It says in a news release that these programs are “ill-equipped ” to deal with these problems, adding the federal carbon tax coming January 1 will only make things even more difficult financially.

The groups want a more comprehensive review than one that is already underway done on risk programs, AgriStabilty changes to cover more losses, and more exemptions from the carbon tax for fuels used in grain drying.

That same news release harvest conditions are the “most critical” in the Peace Country, where half or more of the crop is still out in places.

Team Alberta says $778-million worth of crop is still out in the field across the province and that the poor harvest conditions make it even more important for governments to settle trade problems.
