It’s World Children’s Day and anniversary of child rights

Nov 20, 2019 | 3:50 PM

TANZANIA, Tanzania — It’s World Children’s Day and teenage actress Millie Bobby Brown and former soccer star David Beckham are urging people everywhere to listen to youngsters and ensure their rights and their future.

In celebration of the day and Wednesday’s 30th anniversary of the U.N. adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Brown and Beckham spoke at a high-level General Assembly meeting. They are both goodwill ambassadors for the U.N. children’s agency UNICEF.

Landmarks around the world lit up in blue as a symbol of unity to mark the day — from the Acropolis in Athens to the European Parliament in Belgium to the Shanghai Tower in China. Also illuminated was Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, one of two mosques where 51 worshippers were killed in March.
