Six area high school volleyball teams are scattered across Alberta, as provincial championships are being held this weekend. Here’s a recap of Thursday’s action to open each tournament.

4A Boys and Girls (Jasper Place High School, Edmonton)

Both the boys and girls teams from Charles Spencer are representing the Northwest Region at this year’s tournament.

The Mavericks ladies went 1-2 on the opening day of the event, falling to Hunting Hills out of Red Deer (16-25, 22-25) and St. Francis from Calgary (21-25, 21-25) before picking up a win to close out the day over William Aberhart out of Calgary (25-21, 25-23).

Meanwhile, the men’s side also went 1-2 on day one. They opened with a loss to Notre Dame out of Calgary (19-25, 18-25) before picking up a win over Okotoks’ Holy Trinity Academy (25-23, 17-25, 16-14). They would close out the day with a loss to Chinook High School out of Lethbridge (21-25, 26-28).

Both teams play their first playoff games today. The men will take on Harry Ainlay out of Edmonton at 10 a.m., while the women will face Chinook at 2 p.m. Their next match will be decided based on those outcomes.

3A Boys (Magrath High School, Magrath)

The St Joe’s Celtics are the zone representatives down in southern Alberta.

Those Celtics came away with a win on Thursday over St. Paul (25-23, 25-27, 15-11) to open the tournament.

Round robin play continues Friday, with the Celtics playing three matches. They’ll face Strathcona Christian at 11 a.m., Morinville at 3:15 p.m. and Lethbridge Collegiate at 7 p.m.

3A Girls (St. Paul Regional High School, St. Paul)
