Town of Peace River set to celebrate 100th birthday

Nov 25, 2019 | 5:30 AM

The Town of Peace River will be celebrating their 100th birthday on December 1.

December 1, 1919, was the day the Village of Peace River was officially incorporated as the Town of Peace River.

The town has been having activities and events happening since January to celebrate their centennial year.

Alisha Mody, Co-Chair of the Centennial Committee, says they will be having closing ceremonies, and be sealing the centennial-year time capsule as well.

“It’s not about the history of the town, but actually what 2019 was like in Peace River. So, we’ve got a whole bunch of different things, different sporting groups and that sort of thing, we’ve got contributions from quilting groups and some local businesses, DMI, which transitioned to Mercer this year, has submitted something, the town’s budget from 2019, all sorts of things.”

The time capsule is set to be re-opened in 50 years time.

The event will have live music, a re-signing of the town certificate of incorporation and food, with it all taking place at the Baytex Energy Centre and beginning at 1 p.m.

Mody adds there will also be free skating and swimming to end the day, both beginning at 3:30 p.m.
