Hythe hosting Christmas Tree Drop Saturday

Nov 29, 2019 | 2:25 PM

Hythe is getting a giant Christmas tree again this year.

The second annual Christmas Tree Drop will be held Saturday.

A 42-foot high tree from a farm in the Valhalla area will be lowered onto a stand set up on Main Street from a helicopter.

Hythe Mayor Brian Peterson says this event proved to be very popular when it was first held a year ago.

“It was more popular than we had anticipated and caused a lot of excitement. We really enjoyed it. I think it’ll become a tradition. “

He adds the tree won’t be the only attraction.

“The tree will be helicoptered into town at 1 o’clock and put into the tree stand in the centre of town here. Shortly after that, we’re going to have a guest who will also come in on helicopter from the North Pole. (you) probably know who that might be.”

There will also be a barbecue, horse and carriage rides, and people can bring a decoration for the tree. There will also be a toy collection in support of the Hythe Food Bank Christmas Hamper Program at the Golden Age Centre.

Peterson says this year’s tree is coming from Larry and Mabel Hanson’s farm this year after coming from Peter von Tiesenhausen’s farm near Demmitt last year.

The lighting of this year’s tree is set for 5 p.m. Saturday.
