Wednesday rally planned to protest planned job cuts
The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees has scheduled a rally for next Wednesday in Grande Prairie to protest the newest round of planned job cuts by the UCP government.
Alberta’s largest public-sector union says the provincial government plans to cut up to 5,900 positions, as part of its plan to balance the budget by the 2022-23 fiscal year.
Government and Alberta Health Services employees are reported to be targeted by the layoffs, with some vacant positions also expected to be eliminated.
A letter from the government sent to the union says jobs are guaranteed until March 30, but adds as of April 1, the government will use all options available to meet its priorities.
