Violet Margaret Simonson (Winiandy) passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2019, at the age 84 years, after a lengthy struggle with her health.

Vi was born July 17, 1934 in Fairview, AB, the daughter of Mary and Fred Winiandy and nine siblings – they lived in many northern communities. Vi married Ed Simonson on March 2, 1963 and they raised their family on a farm near Spirit River. Vi enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, and had a profound passion for flowers and berry-picking. She was an amazing homemaker and often entered her prize baking and crafts in many fairs, where she would often win. Vi worked for a few years cooking in oilfield camps. She loved going for drives looking at wildlife, and she sure enjoyed a good steak!

Family and friends were Vi’s passion and delight. She always had a smile to greet everyone. A campfire was always a place to bring everyone together.

She enjoyed many arts and crafts: sewing, crocheting, puzzles, bingo and playing Quirkle- if you took to long, she would ask, “Are you homesteading?”

She will be sadly missed by her siblings; Leonard Winiandy, Alma Winiandy and Doreen Horseman; daughters Pat Jansen (Colin) and Connie Winiandy (Rob); sons Greg (Katherine) and Skie Simonson; grandchildren: Toni, Curt, Melanie, Lonny, Moneca, Kevan, Chantel, Monique, JR, Angel, Anice, Dustin, Amber, Devin, Kyle and Kat; 20 great-grandchildren; as well as many other family and friends.

Violet was predeceased by her husband Edwin; daughter Donna; parents Fred and Mary; brothers: Fraser, Billy, Frank and Raymond; and sisters Dorothy and Jean.

Celebration of life for Violet will be held on Friday, June 28, 2019, at 11:00am, at the Spirit River Centennial Hall (4812 44 Ave.).

The family wishes to thank those at Pleasant View Lodge, Central Peace Health Complex, and Dr. Kitagawa, who cared for her.
