Structural study to be done on Clairmont Arena

Dec 9, 2019 | 5:02 PM

County of Grande Prairie council has approved funding for an engineering check of the structural integrity of the Clairmont Area.

The amount approved in $9850.

The building has been closed since a leak found in the roof led to safety concerns.

Clairmont Ag. Society President Cindy Trudel says the closure has impacted a lot of users.

“Right now, there are 14 beer league teams, three other community teams, Sexsmith Clairmont and Grande Prairie, and ringette.

Those teams have been refunded any fees they had paid.

County manager of parks and recreation Christine Rawlins says a decision must be made on what to do about the ice plant.

“Because it’s obviously costing the (Ag). Society money to keep it running, but yet there are no bookings at the moment. So, we want to use our safety codes officer and someone from our Parks and Recreation department just to come together with the Ag. Society and sort of put our heads together and see what might be the best direction.”

She adds they hope to have that report completed by mid-January.

“Then I guess we’ll probably have the Ag. Society take a read through that and see what recommendations they’re making in terms of structural repairs. It would be up to the Society to go and get multiple quotes.”

Rawlins says the Ag. Society could then come back to Council to ask for funding for repairs, depending on what is in the engineer’s report.
