Sylvan Lake woman accused of taking over $500,000 from employer

A Sylvan Lake woman stands accused of stealing more than $500,000 from her employer.

Laurie May Watts, 55, has been charged with theft over $5,000, use of credit card data, forge a document and uttering a forged document.

The charges come following a lengthy investigation that started in July.

It was on July 24 when Rimbey RCMP heard from a local business that believed that one of their employees was taking cash from the business account.

The investigation determined that fraudulent activity started as early as February 2017.

On August 30, police say the suspect turned herself in and was arrested.

“The investigation is complex and RCMP members continue to work on obtaining different pieces of information from various financial institutions,” RCMP Cpl. Laurel Scott says in a release.

Watts appeared in Rimbey provincial court on Dec. 6 and her next court appearance is slated for March 6, 2020.
