Deadline to get in on carbon tax exemption approaching for farmers

Dec 12, 2019 | 2:27 PM

Farm fuel, both diesel and gasoline, will be exempt from the federal carbon tax when it comes to Alberta January 1.

But, farmers must fill out and submit a form by December 31 to be eligible for this exemption.

UFA’s vice-president of petroleum Don Smith says they are finding that as a lot of farmers were surprised when they first heard about this requirement.

“We certainly have noticed that through social media that it does appear that a lot of people didn’t know that they would have to fill out the form in order to ensure that they’re continuing to purchase fuel exempt of the carbon tax come January 1.”

He adds producers can talk to whoever they buy their fuel from if they need a form or have questions.

“UFA, as soon as those forms became available at the beginning of December, we actually sent out a lot of those forms to our members. It also had a self-addressed envelope so that they could fill it out and send it back to us to make sure we try and get that process (finished) by the end of December.”

Smith says the forms are simple to fill out.

“It’s not very complicated at all. They have to include the name or the name of their business entity, their business number which will likely either be a GST number or a business number generated by the CRA.”

Forms can also be found online.
