Alzheimer Society to host open house this Wednesday

Dec 15, 2019 | 7:00 AM

The Alzheimer Society in Grande Prairie will be hosting an open house on Wednesday, December 18.

Jennifer Simms, the Regional Lead for the Alzheimer Society for Alberta and Northwest Territories, says the open house is an opportunity to learn about what the society does, and to recognize the year 2019.

“Part of that look back is going to be to talk about our support groups, our peer support group that was launched in Beaverlodge, that we have some new resources that are becoming available, we’re looking at launching some new programs for 2020, things like that. So, we’re hoping to be able to see people that way.”

Simms adds that the Society offers educational support to those living with the disease.

“What we most pride ourselves in is being able to help families to connect. Our goal is to be able to have a referral come in as a family is given a diagnosis, so then families can prepare as early as possible, be able to give somebody a voice as early on in the disease as possible to be able to live well.”

This coming January is also Alzheimer Awareness Month, a national campaign that aims to reduce stigma around the disease through education.

The open house runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on at Suite 102, 9823 116 Avenue.
