Winter Try-It Day returning to Grande Prairie

Dec 16, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Winter Try-It Day is returning to Grande Prairie for its sixth year on January 18, 2020.

The day is operated by the Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection and gives kids aged 6-17 an opportunity to try different sports for free. There are more than 35 sports for kids to try and more than 500 kids participate in the event each year.

Some of those sports include luge, water polo, squash, parkour, and judo among many others.

This year’s event is the first time Try-It Day has expanded its age group. In years previous, the age group was between 6-12.

The Executive Director of Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection Karna Germsheid tells EverythingGP the reason for the increased age limit is because statistics show that around the age of 13, kids are starting to drop out of sports.

“For example, here in Grande Prairie, we have some great club systems, but sometimes you only have a certain number of spots that you are trying out for. So, what are kids doing after they don’t make it onto these club teams? We want to show them that there are 90 different sports that are offered in the region, so their options are open.”

Registration opens today (December 16). A link to do so can be found here.

All sessions are first-come, first-serve.
