Storm return from Christmas break for a pair of games

Jan 3, 2020 | 5:30 AM

The Grande Prairie Storm are back from the Christmas break and ready for a pair of games this weekend.

They’ll host the Drumheller Dragons on Friday night and the Olds Grizzlys on Saturday night at Revolution Place.

The Storm are coming off some positive results before they headed into the break.

The team played three games in three days, where they were able to win back to back games against the Grizzlys and Calgary Canucks, both by the scores of 5-1, following a road trip-opening loss to the Brooks Bandits.

“I thought we had a really good effort against Brooks and I thought we played four really good periods out of six against Olds and Calgary. I really liked that we worked on a couple things in practice and I saw it implemented in the game and executed properly,” said Storm Interim Head Coach Ryan Aasman.

The team is currently sitting in a tie for fifth place in the AJHL North division with 33 points (15-17-3), only three points behind fourth place Whitecourt.

While the Christmas break gave the Storm players a chance to relax and wind down, Aasman and some of the Storm scouting staff were able to head down to Calgary to watch the Mac’s Midget AAA tournament for a couple of days.

“We spent lots of time in Calgary to watch the Mac’s for a couple days. I thought it was important to communicate with the scouting staff and get everybody together to talk and have some fun watching hockey together. It’s not only the on-ice things, but it’s off-ice as well to try and create a positive culture.”

Now that the team is back together, the team is looking forward to their games this weekend. Aasman noted that just because the calendar has flipped doesn’t mean that the expectations have changed.

“We want two points on Friday versus Drumheller and we want to continue to create those habits going (into) every single game into the second half and it started with two good practice days. I expect us to come out with a really good effort on Friday.”

Puck drop for both games this weekend is set for 7:30 p.m. at Revolution Place.
